On Tuesday evening, in front of a crowd of over 5,000 fans, Rytas Vilnius faced off in a fierce FIBA Champions League battle against Istanbul’s Galatasaray MCT Technic. Despite a dramatic contest that pushed both teams to their limits and required overtime, Rytas ultimately had to concede an 85:89 defeat to the visitors.

The game opened with a long-range strike from Speedy Smith, followed shortly by an “and-one” play from Artūras Gudaitis (6:0). As the opponents struggled to find gaps in the home side’s defense, Smith buried another three-pointer, forcing the Galatasaray MCT Technic bench to call an early timeout (9:0). It took four minutes for the visitors to record their first point from the charity stripe, but Jerrick Harding quickly responded with two more points for Rytas (11:1). While Can Korkmaz scored the first field goal for the visitors, Harding answered with another spectacular drive and a foul (14:3). However, a foul by Jordan Caroline allowed the visitors to chip away at the lead, and after a few Rytas turnovers, the gap narrowed to four points by the end of the first quarter (20:16).

The visitors started the second period stronger, briefly snatching the lead (20:21), but Rytas surged ahead again behind the play of Artūras Gudaitis (24:21). A Galatasaray triple tied the score, but Simonas Lukošius responded with his own shot from deep, while the Galatasaray MCT Technic head coach was assessed a technical foul for his protests (27:26). Harding once again converted a basket plus a foul (30:28), but the Istanbul side finished the half more effectively, leaving Rytas trailing 33:39 at the long break.

Galatasaray began the third quarter with more confidence as Rytas remained scoreless for nearly three minutes (33:42). The drought was eventually broken by Gudaitis at the free-throw line, and following a massive block by the center, Harding added a layup (39:42). Moments later, the arena erupted after a powerful Kay Bruhnke dunk, and Harding leveled the score with free throws (43:43). In a point-for-point battle, Harding once again drew a foul while scoring and followed it up with a triple (49:48). Gudaitis closed the quarter with a successful basket, handing Rytas a slim 57:55 lead heading into the final frame.

Speedy Smith opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, and Gudaitis continued his defensive dominance with another block (61:55). Ignas Sargiūnas then caught fire, knocking down two consecutive three-pointers, and Gytis Masiulis added a block to restore a double-digit lead (69:59). However, Galatasaray MCT Technic mounted a late surge and reclaimed the lead after Kay Bruhnke fouled out (73:76). With less than a minute on the clock, Smith nailed a cold-blooded three-pointer to tie the game at 76:76. After a successful defensive stop on the final possession, the teams headed into overtime.

In the extra period, the visitors started more sharply and, despite missing several free throws, managed a decisive run (81:87). Harding and Smith attempted to save the game with late baskets, but Rytas simply ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Rytas Vilnius will play their next FIBA Champions League match on February 4th, when they travel to France to face Le Mans Sarthe Basket.
