Rytas Vilnius delivered a definitive performance for its home crowd on March 11th, the Day of the Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence. In a pivotal FIBA Basketball Champions League matchup, the Vilnius side defeated France’s Le Mans Sarthe Basket with a final score of 101-81 (28:25, 17:16, 24:20, 32:20).

The occasion was marked by a historic gesture: for the first time in the history of the FIBA Champions League, organizers granted an exception allowing the official singing of the Lithuanian national anthem, “Tautiška giesmė,” prior to tip-off in honor of the national holiday. The heightened atmosphere in the arena translated into a high-intensity performance on the court, as Rytas Vilnius kept its hopes alive for advancement to the next stage of the competition. Critically, having lost the first encounter in France by a 6-point margin, this 20-point victory provides Rytas Vilnius with a strategic advantage in the head-to-head tie-breaker.

The hosts opened the game with high efficiency. Jerrick Harding initiated the scoring with five quick points, and alongside Ignas Sargiūnas, propelled Rytas Vilnius to an early 9-0 run. While the French side eventually found their rhythm, the Vilnius perimeter attack remained effective. The return of Augustas Marčiulionis and a healthy Simonas Lukošius further extended the lead to 23-10. However, the visitors utilized late-quarter three-pointers to narrow the gap to 28-25 by the end of the first period.

The second quarter saw a physical, defensive struggle. Speedy Smith contributed two vital three-pointers and a blocked shot, but Le Mans remained competitive through aggressive play in the paint. At the halftime break, Rytas Vilnius held a narrow 45-41 lead.

The third quarter proved to be a tactical battle. Le Mans briefly took a 54-52 lead, but Rytas Vilnius responded immediately. Gytis Masiulis connected on two consecutive three-pointers, followed by a long-range shot from Simonas Lukošius to regain control. A late basket by Augustas Marčiulionis and free throws from Masiulis allowed the hosts to enter the final frame with an 8-point cushion (69-61).

Rytas Vilnius dominated the fourth quarter to secure the result. Lukošius and Sargiūnas continued their high-percentage shooting from beyond the arc, while Artūras Gudaitis provided a strong defensive presence in the paint. The lead expanded rapidly, punctuated by a transition dunk from Sargiūnas that brought the score to 83-69. Despite late-game technical fouls assessed to both Le Mans’ T. Williams and Rytas Vilnius head coach Giedrius Žibėnas, the home side maintained composure. Jordan Caroline scored the team’s 100th point to finalize the 101-81 victory.

Rytas Vilnius will travel to Istanbul for a decisive matchup in exactly one week, on March 18th. The game will be broadcast live on LRT Plius.
